How does the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) work and how it will affect pharmacists in the UK ?
This EU directive is a barcode tracking system to track legitimate medicines from manufacturers to patients to eliminate falsified fraudulent counterfeit medicines in the supply chain.

All medicine boxes will be equipped with a unique identifier & an anti-tempering device



What are the FMD Unique Identifiers ?

A unique 2D DataMatrix barcode, developed to ISO standards; Key data elements:
•    Product code
•    Unique serial number
•    Expiry date
•    Batch Number

These 2-Dimensional barcodes will be scanned using one of these 2D barcode scanners

Anti-Tampering Device (ATD)
•    The exact nature of the physical ATD will be decided by the manufacturer.
•    If the ATD is broken, the medicine cannot be supplied.
